Portfolio company updates including new partnerships, new executives, board members, and more
Introduction to new Anzu legal team member
Hi everyone,
In July, we celebrated the promotion of Dr. Jimmy Kan as our newest partner at Anzu. Jimmy joined Anzu as an Associate as we closed our first venture fund in 2017. As the firm has grown, Jimmy has been indispensable as a team member, a leader, and a partner to our investors and portfolio companies.
When Jimmy joined Anzu, our firm was still in its early days, and we are grateful to him for taking a risk on us, just as Jimmy has taken on a risk on entrepreneurs and founders in our portfolio. With a Ph.D. in magnetic materials, Jimmy transitioned from a role as an accomplished engineer at Qualcomm (with 20+ patents to his name) to an investor role, bringing both technical depth and market insight to the team.
Based in Anzu’s San Diego office, Jimmy is a core member of the investment team, originating new investments and actively supporting portfolio companies, and progressing to Senior Associate in 2018 and Principal in 2020. Jimmy serves on the Board of Directors of Aspinity, Niron Magnetics, EnCharge AI, South 8 Technologies, and Liquid Instruments, and serves as a board observer at Arduino and TeraPore Technologies. Across these investments, Jimmy has emerged as a thought leader in semiconductor innovations, edge computing, and machine learning.
Inside the firm, Jimmy has shaped many of the core investment processes – from pipeline management to portfolio reviews – that are central to delivering for our investors. As Jimmy joins the partnership, we look forward to his continued contributions and thank him for his continued support as we build the firm together. Please join us in congratulating Jimmy!
Sincerely,
David, David, and Whitney
PORTFOLIO COMPANY UPDATES
Niron Magnetics and GreenSpur Wind Collaborate to Develop New Rare Earth-free Generator Solution for the Offshore Wind Market
Niron Magnetics, the company pioneering the world’s first high-performance, rare earth-free permanent magnets, and GreenSpur Wind, the company that has developed a new generator for the global offshore wind market, announced a collaboration to develop a new, lighter, and highly efficient rare earth-free generator solution for the offshore wind market.
Past iterations of the GreenSpur generator had attracted interest, but there were concerns about its mass. Keeping generator mass within the same range as existing machines is important, as adding weight requires more structural support, which increases cost. By designing with Niron’s Generation 1 Clean Earth Magnet™, which offers significantly stronger magnetic performance than the ferrites used in its earlier generator designs, GreenSpur developed a new 15MW generator. Based upon initial non-optimized results, the new generator delivers a significant 56% reduction in mass.
These findings have been verified by ORE Catapult, the UK’s leading technology innovation and research center for offshore renewable energy.
BioFlyte, a bioaerosol surveillance firm with a disruptive new class of fieldable biological threat collection, detection, and identification solutions, announced that experienced and growth-oriented national security and public sector business leader Todd Sickles has joined the company as Chief Executive Officer.
Sickles most recently served as CEO of Tsymmetry, a Washington DC-based IT consulting and services provider to the federal government, primarily in the homeland security and public sector space. During the ten years he served as CEO, he oversaw and grew key mission-critical programs at Department of State and DHS and collaborated with various federal civilian law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Under his leadership, the firm grew over 300% and pivoted from a staff augmentation services organization to an award-winning government prime contractor. Prior to his tenure at Tsymmetry, Sickles held senior roles within business development, business unit and divisional management, and senior client relationship management at Accenture and BAE Systems IT.

Glycoproteomics to Improve Patient Outcomes

The company’s new facilities include Mandaluyong, Philippines; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Melbourne, Australia; and San Diego, California, adding a large footprint of state-of-the-art laboratories and office space for scaling up InterVenn’s software development, technical support, clinical research, and business development.
e-Zinc, the company enabling sustainable, long-duration energy storage with its zinc-air battery, announced that it has appointed energy and technology industry leader Ron Dizy to its Board of Directors. As a member of the board, Dizy will bring deep industry experience to help e-Zinc grow, commercialize its energy storage technology, and secure new funding.
